INSTRUCTIONAL

INTERVENTION

Instructional interventions aren’t behavioral interventions. They’re aimed at academics.

They’re sometimes called academic interventions. For subjects like reading or math, there are instructional interventions. Instructional interventions are:

Intentional: They’re aimed at a particular challenge.

Specific and formalized: An intervention lasts a certain number of weeks or months and is reviewed at set intervals.

Raising the Bar2 performs assessments in the students’ specific ELA area; decoding and encoding are two instances. Many middle schools and high students struggle with reading due to deficiencies in encoding and decoding. Decoding involves translating printed words to sounds or reading. Encoding involves using individual sounds to build and write words. To master the sound-symbol association, students must understand that there is a correspondence between letters and sounds.
